Cats in Season: Recognising When a Cat is in Heat

Cats can go into season, also called heat, from as early as four months old. During this time, female cats are fertile and able to become pregnant. If they are not spayed, they will continue to go through regular heat cycles each year, typically between February and October, though some cats may show fertility outside these months. Each cycle usually lasts around 2 to 3 weeks, and cats can have multiple cycles during this period.

In the Northern Hemisphere, cats’ breeding season generally runs from spring to late autumn, as longer daylight hours stimulate reproductive hormones. Cats kept indoors with artificial lighting or living in warmer climates may cycle throughout the year.

Typical Behaviours of Cats in Season cats in season

When a cat is in season, you may notice changes in her behaviour. Common signs include:

  • Increased affection and attention-seeking

  • Loud meowing or “calling” to attract males

  • Playfulness and exaggerated tail movements

  • Restlessness or pacing

  • Changes in appetite, sometimes eating less

  • Frequent urination or urinating outside the litter tray

Unlike female dogs, cats in heat do not experience bleeding and usually do not feel pain, though they may appear unsettled or anxious.

Caring for Cats in Season

If you do not want your cat to become pregnant, it’s important to keep her indoors during her cycles. Beyond this, she generally does not require special care. Providing toys, treats, and interactive play can help distract her and reduce stress or restlessness.

Preventing Cats in Season & Heat CyclesThrough Spaying

The only permanent way to prevent heat cycles is to have your cat spayed. Spaying involves removing the ovaries, and sometimes the uterus, which stops your cat from becoming pregnant and eliminates heat cycles.

Spaying also provides several health benefits, including:

  • Lower risk of mammary cancer

  • Prevention of pseudopregnancy

  • Reduced the chance of ovarian or uterine infections and cancers

Unless your cat is intended for breeding, spaying (for females) or neutering (for males) is strongly recommended for both health and behavioural reasons.
