The way a cat behaves depends on a combination of its genetic make-up and the experiences it has been exposed to during its socialisation period. The period is short for kittens, ending at around eight weeks of age, although the kitten will remain receptive to behaviour modification until they are around six months old.

Pure breed cats only represent a small part of the feline population. The term ‘pedigree’ generally refers to the record of the cat’s parentage and ancestry. A pedigree will be registered as a specific breed by one of the main registration bodies for cat breeds, providing a guarantee of conformity to breed characteristics and the cat’s lineage.
Should you get a pure breed cat or not?
There is no right or wrong answer, because it is down to personal preference. Some people prefer to get a cat from a shelter, combining a good deed with the pleasure of having a cat.
Pure breed cats can sometimes be found in shelters as many breed clubs also run a rescue service for cats of their breed that have become homeless.
Occasionally, breeders will also look for homes for their retired cats, although most breeders prefer keeping their retired breeding cats once they have been neutered.

It is much harder to guess the temperament of an adopted or rescued kitten, and fans of moggies will tell you this is part of their charm. Why choose a mixed breed cat?
When a breed is established, only the individual cats which express the required physical characteristics and temperament are kept for reproduction. If only a few individuals present this characteristic, the gene pool can be drastically reduced.
As there are very few qualifying individuals, a degree of inbreeding is unfortunately necessary to secure the desired characteristics. This process can increase the risks of creating genetic problems. However, genetic tests are becoming more widely available to screen for possible breed related genetic disorders to enable breeders to avoid these. Most feline organisations encourage responsible breeding, following good practice in terms of selection and limiting intensive inbreeding.
Some breeders are heightening some morphological specificities to an extreme, which is known as “hypertype”. Examples are the Siamese and Oriental breeds with a more and more elongated head, and in contrast, the Persian and Exotic breeds with their increasingly flattened faces. These exaggerations of conformation are not without anatomical and physiological consequences, and can be the source of health problems.
In non-pedigree and mixed breed cats, the genetic pool is much larger and the chances of developing these hereditary conditions may be significantly lower.
Does gender make a difference in pure or mixed breeds?
The key question is whether there are notable differences in behaviour and character between male and female cats.
The gender difference is less marked in pure breed cats, where temperament is part of the breed specification, enabling you to choose a breed in terms of the character best adapted to your preferences and lifestyle.
With non-pedigree cats, whose character is less predictable, it is sometimes suggested that males are cooler, more tolerant and will wander further, while a female will prefer to stay closer to home. On the other hand, it is also said that females can be more dominant in the house, making cohabitation with other animals difficult sometimes.
That being said, many of the behavioural differences that appear at puberty, for example urine marking in males, or females going into heat, usually cease with neutering.
Whether choosing a mixed breed or pure breed cat, it's important to remember that all cats are individuals and their personalities or living requirements may be different. Speak to the breeder or adoption centre who will be know the personalities of each cat and be able to help you identify which one is best suited to your life and fits any requirements you may have.

Other things that will affect the kind of care and support your cat needs will include whether you choose to get a kitten or an older cat as kittens will require more nurturing, teaching and regular feeding than adult cats; whether you want a pedigree or a ‘moggie’, and whether you go to a breeder or a rescue centre as some rescue cats may have had traumatic experiences that require greater consideration at the outset.
The way a cat acts and responds depends on a combination of its genetic make-up as well as the experiences it has been exposed to. A kitten learns most of its socialising skills in the period up to eight weeks old, so giving them enough time and attention in the early weeks is vital.
Would a cat or kitten fit in with your routine?
Any animal will change your lifestyle, hopefully in unilaterally positive ways. However, some things in your routine may be immovable and it is worth considering how they will work or adapt with the arrival of a cat or kitten.

- Do you have children? This might impact the type of cat you choose to get as some will be less suited to young children than others.
- Do you have other pets in the home and how might they react to the new addition? Introducing a newcomer to established pets can be tricky. This will take time and patience. Total acceptance can take several months, or may not ever occur.
- Do you have outdoor space or will your cat live solely indoors?
- Do you work full time and if so, what will happen to the cat when you’re not in the house?
- Will you be able to appropriately adapt your home to make it cat-friendly?
- How much do you travel? If you are going to go away without your cat, think carefully about the various options for its care.
- Can you financially support your cat’s needs including pet insurance, food, vets bills and potential grooming and boarding?
These questions will not only influence whether your home and lifestyle is conducive to having a happy and healthy cat, but also what type of cat may be best suited to you.
Is your home safe for a cat or kitten?
A cat’s home is an important part of its well-being. After settling in to its new home, a kitten has everything to discover. Let them explore and get their bearings at their own pace but be sure to check for any potential dangers.
Also, make sure there is a quiet space the cat can retreat to, especially when it first comes home, so he/she can gradually get to know her new territory and family over the next few days.
Things you can do to reduce stress in the home include:
- Provide your cat with a dedicated eating area. This must be well away from the litter tray, ideally away from a noisy areas as cats like to have calm spaces to eat.
- Make sure they have a litter tray, again located in a quiet area. This must be in a permanent location which is easily accessible to the cat, and well away from food and water bowls.
- Ensure they have dedicated space for play, hunting, climbing and scratching.
- Provide your cat with their own personal sleeping space.
